ATHENA of the Triangle receives a $30,000 grant from AT&T to Expand ATHENA in STEM Programming

Raleigh, NC, September 18, 2024 – ATHENA of the Triangle, a nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering women leaders, is thrilled to announce that it has received a generous $30,000 grant from AT&T. This funding will significantly bolster ATHENA of the Triangle’s efforts to further develop and expand its ATHENA in STEM programming, aimed to inspire and educate young women to choose careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields.

The ATHENA in STEM program is designed to address the gender gap in STEM industries by providing mentorship, leadership training, and networking opportunities to young women who may pursue careers in these critical areas. With AT&T’s support, ATHENA of the Triangle will enhance its existing initiatives and expand programs to additional local schools.

“We are incredibly grateful to AT&T for this substantial grant,” said Dr. Tiamesha Walker-Smith, Executive Director, ATHENA of the Triangle. “This funding will allow us to expand our ATHENA in STEM programming and continue our mission of empowering young women to lead and excel in their careers. By investing in ATHENA in STEM, we are investing in the future of innovation and leadership in our community.”

The grant from AT&T will be used to:

• Develop new programming
• Partner with additional local schools
• Expand mentorship opportunities, connecting young women with experienced professionals.
• Host STEM-specific educational and networking events to foster collaboration and knowledge sharing.
• Provide scholarships for women pursuing STEM education and careers.

Dr. Atoya Hodges Named New Board President of ATHENA of the Triangle

Raleigh, NC, March 26, 2024 – ATHENA of the Triangle is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Atoya Hodges as the new Board President, effective January 1, 2024. Dr. Hodges brings a wealth of experience and leadership to this esteemed position, embodying the values of ATHENA of the Triangle in empowering women and fostering a culture of excellence and growth.

With a distinguished background spanning over twenty-five years in progressive leadership, education, and operations, Dr. Atoya Hodges emerges as the new Board President of Athena of the Triangle. A seasoned entrepreneur, speaker, author, and strategist, Dr. Hodges brings her unwavering commitment to service, business acumen, and passion for leadership development and mental health to her latest role. Holding multiple degrees, including a BS in Business and Accounting, MBA, M.Ed, MHSA and PhD in Religious Counseling and Hypnotherapy, she epitomizes the essence of lifelong learning. As a devoted wife, mother, and Nana, Dr. Hodges channels her energy into driving wellness initiatives and shattering barriers for women in the global business arena. 

Dr. Hodges is well-positioned to guide ATHENA of the Triangle into its next chapter of success. Her passion for supporting women in leadership roles, coupled with her dedication to our community, aligns perfectly with the mission of ATHENA of the Triangle to support, develop, and honor emerging and established leaders and their allies.

The Athena of the Triangle Treasurer serves as a Board Officer and is a member of the Executive Committee. The Treasurer oversees the contracted bookkeeper and accounting firm in compiling financial data and submitting taxes. Primary responsibilities include retaining custody of all funds; making disbursements as properly authorized; and preparing financial reports for Board meetings and preparing the books for the annual audit. The Treasurer assures that AoT policies and non-profit best practices are followed with regards to financial management.  The incumbent also fulfills any other requirements of a Director and Officer, and performs other duties as the need arises and/or as defined in the bylaws.

(Effort: 4-5 hours per month, average)

POSITION REPORTS TO: Board Chair

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES

Organizations are required by law and by custom to maintain certain records and procedures, including:

1. Handle the money with high standards and set a tone of integrity.

The Treasurer should receive and reconcile the bank statements, set check writing and purchasing policies and procedures.

2. Manage the filings

Keep a calendar of filing requirements and assign responsibility, including Form 990 and Form 1099s.

3. Identify and manage risk

Coordination with our CPA and Insurance providers to both review and make recommendations to protect the organization and minimize risk. Take the lead in safeguarding AoT assets, data, and personal information.

4. Confirm contributions

5. Prepare timely financial reports                                                                                                 

Prepare and disseminate monthly, quarterly and annual financial reports to include Profit and Loss statements and performance to budget. Take the lead in the annual budget preparation process. Work with committees and Executive staff to prepare program budgets and make recommendations to the Executive Committee and Board at large for review.

ACCOUNTABILITY 

The Treasurer is accountable to the Board of Directors.

Communication

The Treasurer ensures that proper notification is given of financial reporting as specified in the bylaws.

Meetings

The Treasurer participates in Board meetings as a voting member and as a member the Executive committee. The Treasurer is also Chair of the Finance Committee and has the flexibility to form the committee from other board members and community volunteers and to leverage their expertise in managing AoT finances.

Signing Officer

The Treasurer may be designated by the Board of Directors and/or bylaws as one of the signing officers for certain documents. In this capacity, the Treasurer may be authorized or required to sign or countersign checks, correspondence, applications, reports, contracts or other documents on behalf of organization.

Filing of Documents

The Treasurer may be the registered agent with respect to the laws of the jurisdiction.; the person upon whom legal notice to the corporation is served, and responsible for ensuring that documents necessary to maintain the corporation are filed.

ATHENA of the Triangle receives a $2,500 grant from the Bioprocessing Development Group for the implementation of ATHENA in STEM.

Raleigh, NC, January 3, 2024 – ATHENA of the Triangle announced it received a $2,500 grant from the Bioprocessing Development Group for the support of ATHENA in STEM.

“I am very excited to see the results of ATHENA of the Triangle’s ATHENA in STEM program and how it impacts the learning of the future scientific community. BPD is looking forward to working with ATHENA of the Triangle on our shared commitment towards meeting the needs of our North Carolina scientific communities” – Eric Dean, BPD Steering Committee Co-Chair.

ATHENA in STEM is a strategic initiative that addresses the underrepresentation of women in STEM related fields. The ATHENA in STEM Mentoring Circles program, in collaboration with a local school, provides students with an engaging educational experience. Students are given the opportunity to visit the campuses of Science, Technology, Engineering, or Math (STEM) companies, fostering an environment where they can envision themselves in STEM career roles in the future.

Complementing this, ATHENA in STEM offers another initiative called ATHENA Speaks. This program involves focused discussions with students led by women leaders in the STEM community. During these sessions, the leaders share insights into their career journeys, drawing inspiration from one of the 8 ATHENA Leadership Principles.
